After the untimely death of Toru Rikiishi during their championship bout, Joe wanders aimlessly from town to town as if trying to escape his own past. After a chance encounter with a former rival, Joe has a change of heart and decides to enter the ring once again. After contending against new world-ranked fighters, Joe finally reaches the championship match against Jose Mendoza, where he rediscovers the fighting spirit he had during his rivalry with Toru.
